What Happens at a Family Court Hearing?

The specific format of your hearing depends on your case type, but most family law hearings follow a similar structure:
  1. Check In and Wait to Be Called
After passing through security, you’ll check in with the courtroom clerk. The judge may handle multiple cases that day, so expect a short wait before being called.
  1. Parties Are Called Before the Judge
Both parties (and their attorneys, if applicable) will be asked to come forward. You’ll stand at designated tables and address the judge as “Your Honor.”
  1. Presenting Your Case
Each side will have the opportunity to speak. Depending on the issue, this may include opening statements, presentation of evidence, witness testimony, and responding to the judges questions.
  1. Judge’s Decision or Continued Hearing
In many cases, the judge will issue a decision the same day. If more information is needed, the matter may be continued to a later date.

What Should I Bring With Me?

Being prepared can make a big difference. Bring:
  • A copy of all court filings and evidence
  • Notes or talking points
  • A list of witnesses, if applicable
  • Valid photo ID
Always dress respectfully. Business casual or professional attire is best when attending court.

Do I Need a Lawyer for My Family Court Hearing?

You are legally allowed to represent yourself in family court. However, having a lawyer can significantly impact the outcome of your case. We are skilled at handling complex cases involving:

After the Hearing: What Comes Next?

Depending on the outcome, the judge may issue an immediate ruling and written order. Or he or she will request more documentation and set a future date for another hearing. In some cases, a judge may encourage mediation.  It’s crucial to follow all instructions carefully. If anything is unclear, always contact your attorney for clarification.
